Coaching & Mentoring

We understand that you might think mentoring and coaching are similar or even the same thing. Here we discuss five differenciation that we think are important:

Coaching


It is task oriented, short term, performance driven, does not require as much design.  The coachee's immediate manager is a critical partner. 

Mentoring


Is relationship oriented, always longterm, development driven. Requires a design phase. Tje inmmediate manager is indirectly involved. 

The confusion often misled companies to choose one option over the other without understanding that they serve a different purpose and follow different paths to a person's development. Not understanding these differences often leads to disappointing results and the mistake of blaming coaching or mentoring, rather of realizing that the company created the wrong system. 


Remember, although mentoring and coaching are different, they do share common elements. It's often a difference in emphasis and outcomes that creates the distinction. Also, there are some coaches who have the ability to act more as mentors and vice versa. What we share here is a more wide general differences that may not  apply in all situations but do apply in a very large number of them.
